MS Dhoni’s return to captaincy after two years hardly improved Chennai Super Kings’ fortunes as they were restricted to their lowest-ever total at home by defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match on Friday. CSK could manage just 103/9 at the end of 20 overs, with all-rounder Shivam Dube top-scoring for the five-time champions with an unbeaten 31 off 29 balls, after KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane opted to field.

Dhoni had been under immense pressure for failing to make meaningful contributions with the bat in what has so far been a season to forget for the ‘Yellow Army’, and could manage just one off four deliveries. What made things worse for ‘Captain Cool’ was the fact that he once again held himself back and walked out to bat at No 9, instead of making his way to the centre with the scorecard reading 65/4 at the end of the 11th over following Rahul Tripathi’s dismissal.

Veteran spin-bowling all-rounder Sunil Narine was the pick of the KKR bowlers with figures of 3/13 from four overs while Harshit Rana (2/16) and Varun Chakravarthy (2/22) were the other key performers with the ball.

Chennai Super Kings post lowest total at Chepauk

CSK’s previous lowest total at home was 109 against Mumbai Indians in 2019. MI, incidentally, are also the only team to have bowled CSK out for less than 100, having achieved it twice (79 in 2013 and 97 in 2022), both occurring at the Wankhede Stadium.

Had it not been for Dube collecting a couple of boundaries in the final over, CSK might have posted their third sub-100 total on Friday.

CSK currently finds itself at the ninth spot on the points table, losing four games in a row after winning their season-opening clash against fellow five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians, and currently face the prospect of a fifth defeat in six games.

And given the fact that their batting department has under-performed in nearly all of the matches that they have played so far, netizens did not spare Dhoni and his men from the usual criticism, with a dose of trolling.
