A supermarket spreadable butter has officially been declared superior to Lurpak - and it's 60 percent cheaper. A recent study by Which? revealed the UK's top spreadable butter, with three supermarket own-brands outperforming Lurpak in both taste and price.
In a blind taste test, the consumer watchdog asked 67 individuals to rate eight supermarket spreadables from Aldi, Asda, Lidl, Morrisons, M&S, Ocado, Tesco and Waitrose, as well as the famous Danish brand.
Aldi's Nordpak emerged as the winner, lauded for its creaminess, colour and balanced flavour. Priced at £2.18 for 500g, it was also one of the most cost-effective options.
Lurpak secured fourth position, impressing the panel with its appearance, flavour and texture. However, it was the most expensive spread tested, costing nearly £5 for 400g – over 60 percent pricier than Aldi's product, reports the Express.
M&S Lightly Salted Butter Blend secured second place, also earning a Best Buy label. Despite scoring highly for flavour and texture, and containing the highest proportion of butter among the spreads tested, it was almost twice the price per 100g compared to Aldi's product.
According to the taste test, Aldi's Nordpak emerged as the top performer, surpassing even the popular Lurpak brand. With a score of 75 percent, it was not only deemed one of the most delicious but also the most affordable option, priced at £2.18 for 500g. This works out to 44p per 100g, significantly cheaper than its branded counterpart.
Another supermarket spreadable that outshone Lurpak, albeit by a narrower margin, was Morrisons Salted Spreadable. Priced at £1.97 for 450g, it is half the cost of the branded butter and was praised by tasters for its texture.
In contrast, Tesco Butterpak lost points due to its aroma and flavour. Waitrose Spreadable, surprisingly, received the lowest score overall, with the panel describing it as lacking in both flavour and creaminess.
Natalie Hitchins, Which? head of home products and services, said: "A spreadable butter that can be used straight out of the fridge and without making a mess of your bread can save time and stress.
"We've churned through offerings from the main supermarkets and found Aldi's Nordpak is not only the tastiest tub on test, but also less than half the price of its branded counterpart."
The consumer champion tested spreadable butters made with a blend of butter and vegetable oil, only including those that were salted and had a similar butter/oil content to Lurpak. Spreads made with buttermilk were not included in the test as they are not comparable.
Aldi Nordpak's impressive performance earned it both the Which? Best Buy and Great Value commendations. M&S Lightly Salted Butter Blend secured the second spot with a score of 74 percent.
The product's flavour and texture were praised, but it was noted to be pricier than most own labels at £2.30 for 250g/92p per 100g. It also received a Which? Best Buy award.
Morrisons Salted Spreadable scored 73 percent, proving to be another commendable supermarket own-label at £1.97 for 450g/44p per 100g. Lurpak achieved a score of 72 percent. While it scored well for flavour, it was the most expensive spread tested at £4.75 for 400g/£1.19 per 100g.
Ocado Lightly Salted Spreadable scored 70%. It was generally liked, scoring well on appearance, flavour, and creaminess at £2.25 for 500g/45p per 100g.
Asda Spreadable Slightly Salted scored 69 percent. Despite the tasters not finding the texture as satisfying as higher-scoring spreads, it is worth considering. It costs £2.18 for 500g/44p per 100g. Lidl Danpak Spreadable Slightly Salted scored 66%.
Although Lidl's spread isn't bad, others were rated more highly for aroma and strength of flavour. It costs £2.18 for 500g/44p per 100g.
Tesco Butterpak Spreadable Slightly Salted scored 64%. Tesco's offering had a good appearance, but the panel were disappointed with the aroma and flavour. It costs £2.18 for 500g/44p per 100g.
Waitrose Spreadable scored the lowest at 59%, lacking in both flavour and creaminess. It costs £2.75 for 500g/55p per 100g.
