Airtel lands the world’s longest subsea internet cable in India

Airtel has been investing in subsea global cables like i2i, Europe India Gateway, IMEWE and others for years.

Bharti Airtel, one of the three major telecom operators in India has landed the 2Africa Pearls cable in the country. Laid in partnership with center3 and Meta, Airtel is the landing partner for the cable in India. 2Africa Pearls is part of the 2Africa subsea cable system, which currently aims to be the world’s longest undersea internet cable. Spanning over 45,000 kms, the larger cable system will connect Asia to Africa and Europe via the Middle East.

This cable is backed by a consortium of companies like Bayobab, center3, China Mobile International, Meta, Orange, Telecom Egypt, Vodafone Group, and WIOCC, with Alcatel Submarine Networks responsible for the production and installation.

“We are thrilled to bring the 2Africa Pearls cable to India adding to our network resilience. We are aggressively diversifying our global network and recently landed the SEA-WE-ME-6 cable in Chennai and Mumbai. We will continue investing in global cable systems and future-proof our network with an aim to deliver high uptime, reliability, and superior quality network to our customers”, said Sharat Sinha, the Director and CEO of Airtel Business.

The company says its global network spans over 4,00,000 route kilometers and is available in 50 counties spanning five continents. The network operator already invested in 34 cables globally, with some recent ones including 2Africa, Southeast Asia-Japan Cable 2 and Equiano.

Airtel says its subsea global network also includes large cable systems like i2i cable network, Europe India Gateway, IMEWE, SEA-ME-WE-4, AAG, Unity, EASSy, Gulf Bridge International and the known Middle East North Africa Submarine Cable (MENA).
