COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — An animal abuse investigation in Colleton County has resulted in the seizure of 22 animals from a property on Running Creek Lane. The investigation, conducted by Colleton County Animal Services in collaboration with the Colleton County Sheriff's Office and Cottageville Police Department, began after a concerned citizen reported the situation on March 19, 2025.
Upon arrival, Animal Control officers detected a strong odor emanating from the property, according to the sheriff's office. Peering through a window, they said they observed four live dogs and numerous deceased animals in a room filled with cages. A search warrant was obtained, and with the assistance of Cottageville Police Chief Mitchell and a Colleton County Sheriff’s Office detective, officials entered the residence.
The animals were found in deplorable conditions, according to authorities.
"All of the animals now have a chance at loving homes and are receiving the care they deserve," said Director Laura Clark from Colleton County Animal Services.. "We are grateful for the swift and coordinated efforts of the Sheriff's Office, Cottageville PD, and our rescue partners to ensure the wellbeing of these animals."

Authorities are urging the public to come forward if they have been searching for a missing pet, as the person involved admitted to picking up some of the animals as strays. Concerned individuals can contact Colleton County Animal Services for information about their pet.
The investigation is ongoing, and criminal charges are expected once further evidence is processed. An update will be provided as more information becomes available, the sheriff's office said.
