A pair of Virgin Islands athletes posted top-five finishes in their events during this weekend’s Carolina Spring Break Classic meet, which concluded Saturday in Carolina, Puerto Rico.
St. Croix’s Mikaela Smith, a former middle-distance runner at Austin Peay University, ran in two events at the Spring Break Classic.
Smith finished fourth overall in the women’s 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 17.34 seconds. Later that day, she finished fifth in the women’s 1,500-meter run in 4:57.48.
Omar Simpson, who became eligible to compete for the USVI last May, also competed in two events at the Spring Break Classic.
Simpson won his heat race and finished fifth overall Saturday in the men’s 400-meter dash in 47.82 seconds. The previous day, he finished second in his heat race and ninth overall in the men’s 200-meter dash in 21.83 seconds.
