Top 8: The best Easter eggs for 2025, including supermarket own-brands

Our Easter egg review is the reward for my team of tasters who look forward to it every year. We do our best to find new brands and spot something fun and interesting, ideally Irish.

While many of the eggs that appealed to us this year happened to be dark, there are many milk chocolate equivalents.

Dark chocolate has fewer sugars and fats, which is a plus. A thumb-sized portion a day may even be good for us.

The children, as usual, preferred milk chocolate, but they were outnumbered by adult tasters who wanted chocolate richness and something new to give as a gift.

Since we rejected quite a few oversweet eggs, it’s not surprising that all our Top 8 got high scores.

Mini eggs make lovely table decorations (rob from inside large eggs). Nestle them in a basket with a few branches, leaves, grass cuttings, or daffodils. We liked Cartwright & Butler sugar-coated chocolate hazelnut praline mini eggs from Brown Thomas (€10 for 17).

If the children receive more eggs than you are happy with, break pieces off to add to hot milk for delicious hot chocolate or store them in the freezer.

Guinness dark chocolate rugby ball 196g €15

Is it a rugby ball, is it an egg? It doesn’t matter, as this small shape has delicious dark chocolate with 54% cocoa solids, which is smooth and silky. The six chocolate truffles have that whiff of richness that comes from alcohol in chocolates, in this case, black stout. A fun egg to have for a sporty lunch. Made in Ireland by Lir, which also makes Baileys eggs.

Score: 9

Carol Kinsella milk chocolate egg 250g €13

With three solid bunnies, this brand has 36% cocoa solids in a rich, smooth, rich chocolate with a hint of vanilla—a welcome addition to our Top 8 this year. Made in Dublin by the Kinsella family, we bought it in SuperValu.

Score: 9

Skelligs dark chocolate mint shard egg 175g €13

No extra chocs here, but the luxuriousness of the mint with a fair 60% cocoa solids is delicious as an after-dinner treat. Lovely fresh mint shards have a little crunch in just the right quantity. Made in Ireland.

The Chocolate Shop DIY egg 325g €21

You can buy half or whole egg to fill with your favourite chocolates (here, cherries and solid eggs). Our dark chocolate shell was elegant and smooth. You can also have two halves to make a whole, in whatever combination appeals – one milk, one white, one dark, one milk, to make an attractive egg, to appeal to all of a family. A very good gift from a good Cork business. At English Market stall, Cork.

M&S Collection dark chocolate & raspberry egg 244g €18

Tasters were pleasantly surprised by this delicious egg with a tangy raspberry flavour. The beautifully shaped egg is slightly pointed, like a turkey egg, with eight raspberry-flavoured truffles. A decent 64% cocoa solids makes for a smooth finish.

M. Greco Azienda Dolciaria 150g €14.90

This arrangement of six eggs, made in Italy, is a cute posy for a lovely gift or table decoration. The 31% cocoa solids deliver a rich taste. Not cheap, but a lovely treat. We bought in Delitaly, Marlborough Street, Cork.

Score: 8.5

Dunnes Simply Better Caramel Crisp 250g €10 (€9 on offer at purchase time)

Solid caramel crisp pieces run throughout the egg, which comes with a Belgian chocolate and honeycomb bar. A decent 34% cocoa solids results in an elegant richness. Loved by younger tasters. Made in Co Cavan by Aine Chocolate.

Score: 10

Lidl Deluxe coffee egg 200g €6.99

If an Easter egg can be described as elegant, then this is it. A thin shell is gently flavoured with ground coffee, the dark 55% cocoa solids are not bitter, but with 25% milk solids, not milky either, and there are decorative swirls of white chocolate. Ideal as an after-supper treat. Made in Ireland.
