It’s 10pm on a Monday evening and there’s palpable excitement on Piccadilly in central London. A long queue snakes from the Waterstones entrance all along the street, populated by people in fake beards, black jumpsuits and glittery dresses. Some of them carry (fake) axes or bows. I feel extremely underdressed.

The crowd is here for the midnight release of Sunrise on the Reaping, the fifth book in Suzanne Collins’s Hunger Games series. Since the first was published in 2008, the novels have sold more than 100 million copies globally. They kick-started a trend for dystopian YA fiction and have been made into Hollywood films starring Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Rachel Zegler.
