Former '90s NFL running back Calvin Jones's passing was confirmed on Wednesday by Omaha Police at the age of 54. Authorities believe the cause of death suggests carbon monoxide poisoning.

The death was confirmed by Omaha Police in Nebraska, who answered a call from a home near 38th and Franklin Street following a neighbor’s alert of a gas odor in the area. Authorities found Jones in the basement, where a generator was present, and noted "signs of carbon monoxide poisoning."

A confirmed cause of death is still pending via an autopsy report that has yet to take place. The running was born in Omaha, played high school football in the city, and stayed in the state for college at Nebraska. Jones entered the NFL as a third-round pick of the Las Vegas Raiders in the 1994 Draft. He played two seasons with the Raiders before joining the Green Bay Packers in 1996, where he won a Super Bowl.

In 2000, he capped off his playing career with the Omaha Beef in arena football while the team was a member of the Indoor Professional Football League. The league ceased operations in 2001 and saw the National Indoor Football League absorb the franchise where Jones made his mark.

The football legacy of Jones grew to fame as part of an electric and effective rushing attack from 1990 to 1993. The 1991 Cornhuskers finished the season with a record of 9-2-1 and were the No. 15 ranked team in the nation. The combination of Jones and leading rusher Derek Brown accounted for 2213 yards and 28 touchdowns.

The 1993 team was the most successful of Jones's run with the university after the Cornhuskers lost just one game with an 11-1 record. Jones rushed for a team-high 1043 yards and 12 touchdowns just one year before Tommy Frazier would take over at QB and lead Nebraska to back-to-back National Championship wins.

Jones became the third player in school history to rush for consecutive 1,000-yard seasons and the third to rush for over 100 yards in six games. He became a finalist for the Doak Walker Award won by Boise State's Ashton Jeanty this season, awarded annually to the nation’s top running back.

Jones accumulated over 3,000 rushing yards and scored 40 touchdowns in college. He led the Big 8 Conference in scoring as a freshman, and as a sophomore, he earned All-American honors. The duo of Jones and Brown drove Nebraska to the team rushing title and an Orange Bowl appearance.

He started his football journey at Omaha Central, where he set multiple high school records, including single-game, single-season, and career rushing yards. His 1989 season earned him Gatorade Circle of Champions state running back of the year honors, averaging an impressive 8.4 yards per carry. Jones was inducted into Nebraska's Hall of Fame in 2004.
