LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - Making the first 2024 Campaign visit to the Coulee Region, Vice President Kamala Harris focused on the issue of access to abortion.
It's an issue that Democrats hope will deliver another four years in the White House come November. In fact, in the latest Marquette Law School Poll out just last week, Democrats name it as their top issue.
During her remarks on Monday afternoon, the Vice President argued it's a moral issue as well.
"The majority of us as Americans do have empathy," said Vice President Harris. "And, what I'm finding is that more and more people will openly agree that one does not have to abandon their faith or deeply held beliefs to agree the government shouldn't tell her what to do with her body."
The same Marquette Poll shows a majority of Wisconsin voters--upwards of 60% including Democrats, Republicans and Independents--disagree with the Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade, but the same poll also asked for the first time whether they support a 15-week national ban on abortion with certain exceptions and found 54% support for that question.
Democrats attending the Vice President's visit told News 19 they believe their message will ultimately motivate and resonate with voters come November, as it did in the recent state supreme court and gubernatorial elections. They also point to another motivating factor.
"We have new state legislative maps," said Rep. Katrina Shankland (D-Stevens Point). "We're getting new candidates, three times the level of competitive districts. What does that mean for the top of the ticket? I think we're going to see new people voting. I think we're going to see people who haven't voted in awhile show up to vote because they know their vote for their State Assembly Rep. or their State Senator is going to matter."
The Marquette Poll currently shows former president Donald Trump leading President Biden 51-49% among both registered and likely voters. The poll's margin of error is about 5% among both demographics.
