Battle Creek middle schools receive $50k to support sports from Tony the Tiger, Meijer
SPRINGFIELD, Mich. — Middle school sports in Battle Creek Public Schools are set to get a boost, thanks to a generous donation of $50,000.
Special guests including Tony the Tiger and University of Michigan running back Donovan Edwards visited Springfield Middle School Thursday to give a sizeable donation aimed at giving more kids access to sports.
The funds come from Kellogg's Frosted Flakes Mission Tiger and Meijer via DonorsChoose.org, and help support soccer and softball programs for middle school boys and girls in Battle Creek.
"A few years ago, Tony the Tiger noticed that many middle schools were losing funding for middle school sports," said Doug VanDeVelde, W.K. Kellogg Co. Chief Growth Officer.
"That meant kids did not have the opportunity to learn teamwork, and learn how to play like tigers. Tony was not okay with that, so he started Mission Tiger, an initiative to fund middle school sports."

Other guests included Kaylee Schultz, Meijer Director of Merchandising for Dry Grocery.
Springfield Middle School hosted its first soccer competition last week thanks to the funds, according to school officials.
Over 2 million kids have been helped by Mission Tiger so far, according to officials from W.K. Kellogg.
