DOHA: The high-profile ‘The Big 5 Qatar’ expo kicked off yesterday. The Minister of Municipality and Environment H E Mohamed bin Abdullah Al Rumaihi formally opened the three-day event at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center.

Some 240 companies from over 20 countries are showcasing their innovative and state of the art products related to the infrastructure and construction sector at the exhibition, with many countries having their national pavilions. The international pavilions include Turkey, Italy, India, China, Iran and Kuwait amongst others.

To further promote the unique opportunity that Qatar has to offer to international business visitors, The Big 5 Qatar along with the Qatar Tourism Authority features a Hosted Buyers Program and International Media Tour throughout the event – bringing global business visitors even closer to local prospects.

Bringing solutions for the entire construction process, the event displays hundreds of products across seven dedicated sectors: Plant Machinery and Vehicles; Concrete; Construction Tools & Building Materials; MEP Services; Building Envelope & Special Construction; Construction Technologies & Innovations; Building Interiors & Finishes. More than just an exhibition, The Big 5 Qatar also provides industry professionals with invaluable learning opportunities throughout the event in the form of free to attend CPD (Continuing Professional Development) certified courses. Visitors can attend over 40 workshops and receive a certificate at the end of each session, at no cost.

The workshops cover a wide range of topics under six industry leading themes including Infrastructure and Urban Planning, Project Management and General Construction, Architecture and Design, Sustainability, Technology and Innovation, and the ‘Women in Construction’ series which will kick off on the final day.

Local-based Founding Partners head these sectors, each reflecting the high standard and wide variety of services that Qatar has to offer the construction sector. The Founding Partners include Qatar Building Company, SMEET, IESCO, QALEX, Palmera Landscapes, CHIP International, QIMC, and Al Sehmiah.

Commenting on business opportunities in Qatar, Youssef A Wazni, Senior Sales Manager at Thyssenkrupp Elevator Qatar, said: “Qatar’s growth strategy and vision fuel a fast growing economy. For those companies that can meet or even exceed the local clients’ stringent requirements, Qatar is and will remain an attractive global investment hub, especially for industries related to construction.”

Obaida Al Deeb, Executive Manager for Qatari Al Tamyeez Security Systems Co commented on what it means to have local and international companies together under one roof: “One can improve business in the region by attracting investors globally. The Big 5 Qatar will help in building new corporations and partnerships with companies and associations as well as individuals.”

Nicole Ivers, Safety Health and Environment Director at AECOM looks forward to her session in the series, and said: “The whole world is watching Qatar - it has the opportunity to re-define construction and drive the highest standards.”
