Shell Makes Large Discovery in Gulf of Mexico
Shell has made a deepwater discovery offshore southeast of New Orleans.

Shell announced a large, deepwater discovery in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico May 24 with its Dover well. The Dover discovery is located about 13 miles from the Appomattox host and marks Shell’s sixth in the Norphlet play. It is considered an attractive potential tieback and has encountered more than 800 net feet of pay (244 meters).

The Dover well was drilled in Mississippi Canyon Block 612, located about 170 miles offshore southeast of New Orleans.

“Dover showcases our expertise in discovering new, commercial resources in a heartland helping deliver our deepwater growth priority,” Andy Brown, upstream director for Royal Dutch Shell plc, said in news release. “By focusing on near-field exploration opportunities in the Norphlet, we are adding to our resource base in a prolific basin that will be anchored by the Appomattox development.”

Shell’s Appomattox host (79 percent owned by Shell and 21 percent owned by Nexen Petroleum Offshore USA Inc.) is on location in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico and is expected to start production before the end of 2019.
