DURHAM – Medical testing giant Laboratory Corporation of America plans to add more than 400 jobs to operations in the health-sciences hotbed about 30 miles from its international headquarters in Burlington.

A state committee that oversees major tax breaks for job creation approved a deal Tuesday that could mean $9 million in state and local incentives if the company hits hiring and other milestones, The Associated Press reported.

The company recently leased some 200,000 square feet of office space in Research Triangle Park in two buildings formerly occupied by GlaxoSmithKline.

If new job targets are hit, LabCorp will receive more than $8 million in tax rebate benefits, according to the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

“LabCorp was founded in Burlington almost 50 years ago, and we have stayed close to our roots as we have grown into a global life sciences leader. Bringing many of our valued colleagues together at this location will enhance collaboration, and will complement our well-established diagnostic and drug development operations in RTP and in the Triad,” said LabCorp Chairman and CEO David King.

New jobs will include information technology designers, software developers, operations staff, and senior and middle managers.

“When all the new positions are filled, the total payroll impact will be $27.7 million annually,” Gov. Roy Copper’s office said.

Last week, the Times-News in Burlington reported that the company had no plans to relocate any operations from Burlington.

“We are not able to confirm the story about the lease in RTP,” said Don Von Hagen, a LabCorp spokesman. “LabCorp remains committed to Burlington and Alamance County, and there are no plans to move LabCorp’s headquarters or other operations from this area.”

The newspaper also reported in November that LabCorp filed plans to expand its campus on York Court in Burlington by 100,000 square feet.

LabCorp aopened a lab in Morrisville in 2017.

LabCorp’s plans involve a $30 million investment and adding 422 employees in Durham County in five years. The average wage would be almost $102,000 for information technology and operation work including senior managers and software developers.

The company iemploys more than 57,000 people worldwide.
