Crime Report: Terroristic threats, simple battery, entering an auto, theft of lost or mislaid property

The Emory Wheel regularly meets with Emory Police Department (EPD) Records Manager Ed Shoemaker (87G, 90G) and Communications Director of Campus Safety Morieka Johnson (94C, 24L) and uses EPD’s public crime log to inform the Emory University community about recent crime on and around Emory’s campuses.

To report a crime, contact EPD at 404-727-6111 or police@emory.edu.

Theft of lost or mislaid property at Woodruff Circle

EPD responded to a missing backpack report from a student at about 2:15 p.m. on March 26. The incident occurred the previous evening, on March 25, between 10 and 10:30 p.m.

The student went to the CVS in Emory Village with his backpack. After leaving the CVS, the student walked across campus to Woodruff Circle. At about 11:45 p.m., he boarded a shuttle to Emory’s Clairmont Campus. After arriving, he exited the shuttle and walked to Clairmont Tower at about midnight. The following morning, the student realized he did not have his backpack.

The student contacted Emory Transportation and Parking Services, but they said they could not locate a backpack matching the description the student provided. The student then checked with a CVS staff member, who told the student that the manager was absent, so they could not confirm whether the backpack had been left there.

The backpack contained school supplies worth over $1,500, including a laptop. EPD is working with the student and checking cameras to determine the backpack’s location, according to Shoemaker.

Entering an auto on Pierce Street at Oxford College

EPD met with a contractor working at the Oxford Dining Hall at about 3:00 p.m. on March 27 about someone tampering with her car, located on Asbury Street. One of the contractor’s coworkers told her that an individual had been pulling on one of the door handles of her vehicle and had managed to open the door.

The contractor went to the vehicle and discovered that the individual had stolen a dash cam, touchscreen radio and Bluetooth adapter.

There were no visible signs of forced entry, according to Shoemaker. The contractor also noted that the driver’s side seat seemed to have been intentionally torn by the suspect. EPD circled the area, looking for the suspect and contacted the City of Oxford Police Department so that they would be on the lookout for the suspect.

Shoemaker said that EPD has not located the suspect at this time. EPD will continue to follow up on the case.

Simple battery and terroristic threats at Emory Student Center

EPD officers responded to a report of a disturbance on the second floor of the Emory Student Center (ESC) shortly before 6:00 p.m. on March 27. A student involved in the disturbance said that she had encountered a male student who was spreading false rumors about the pair’s relationship from two weeks prior. She had tried to contact the male student to get him to stop but was unsuccessful, according to Shoemaker.

The female student saw the male in the ESC at about 5:25 p.m. that day and confronted him about the rumors. Once approached about the rumors, the male became defensive and loud toward her and began invading her personal space. She told the male student to stop, but he moved closer, according to Shoemaker. She then sat down and the male student sat on her without consent while calling her derogatory names and saying, “I’ll beat your a**.”

The female student also reported that the male swung an ice pack in her direction but did not strike her with it, which caused her to fear for her safety. The female student contacted EPD, and the male suspect left in the direction of Cox Hall before EPD arrived.

EPD referred the case to the Office of Student Conduct, which will continue a confidential investigation into the male student’s conduct. EPD will work with the female student to determine what criminal prosecution solutions she may want to pursue. The investigation is still ongoing, according to Shoemaker.
