Gorillas from UK land in Mys zoo, under quarantine before display
Mysuru: After an 11-year absence, Mysuru zoo is set to reintroduce gorillas to visitors. Two gorillas from Blackpool Zoo, United Kingdom, have arrived and are currently under quarantine. Sources indicate that the great apes arrived from the UK approximately two weeks ago and remain under observation. The zoo staff are closely monitoring them, and the animals will remain off public display until they adapt to their new surroundings.
A senior officer of Mysuru zoo confirmed the arrival of a pair of gorillas from Blackpool to Mysuru zoo. The quarantine period typically lasts for 30 days, and during this time, the gorillas undergo regular health checks and are monitored for any signs of stress or illness. The diet plan includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, and specialised primate feed to maintain their nutritional requirements.
Meanwhile, the zoo authorities are ensuring that the enclosure where the gorillas will be displayed is designed keeping in mind the natural habitat requirements of gorillas. The enclosure features climate-controlled spaces, multiple enrichment zones, and viewing areas that will allow visitors to observe these magnificent creatures while ensuring the privacy and comfort of the apes.
The Mysuru zoo, which houses over 1,500 animals, reptiles, and birds, displayed a gorilla named Polo for two decades until he died in 2014. Since then, the over-a-decade old zoo hasn't had a gorilla. In fact, it was the only gorilla displayed in captivity in India, an officer claimed.
Polo lived a solitary life and suffered from psychological illness. Though authorities tried to find a pair for him, they couldn't. Polo was brought to Mysuru zoo in 1995 from Ireland, and until his death, he was alone. He, however, entertained lakhs of visitors while he was displayed in an open enclosure.
The new gorillas will add a feather to Mysuru zoo's cap as no other zoo, animal care, rescue centre in India houses gorillas. The Mysuru zoo also houses chimpanzees. A decade ago, a pair of chimps were brought from Singapore. The Mysuru facility also has orangutans. The addition of gorillas will make Mysuru zoo one-of-a kind in India, perhaps in South Asia, to have a large number of primates, including the great apes, on display.
