NHK has learned that Mitsubishi Motors is in talks to develop EVs with electronics giant Hon Hai Precision Industry. The discussions include the Japan automaker outsourcing electric vehicle production to the Taiwan company.
Mitsubishi produces mini-EVs developed with Nissan Motor. However, sources say the automaker is exploring other partnerships due to the massive cost of developing new models. These may also include Nissan and Honda Motor.
Hon Hai, also known as Foxconn, is one of the world's biggest contract makers of smartphones and other electronics. Its EV business is led by a former Nissan executive.
