I tried the new Reese’s Dipped Animal Crackers: How do they stack up against Peanut Butter Cups?

Reese's Dipped Animal Crackers

I tried the new Reese's Dipped Animal Crackers, a new spin on the Reese's brand of mashing peanut butter and chocolate together into a new sweet treat.

The Hershey Company has been expanding the Reese’s brand into new areas over the past few years, mostly with creative spins on their beloved peanut butter cups. Newer iterations include peanut butter cups that are all peanut butter, peanut butter cups that are packed with Reese’s Puff cereal inside, and a series of frozen ice cream treats.

The newest line of Reese’s snacks are Reese’s Dipped Animal Crackers, which are exactly what they sound like - the classic animal-shaped cracker cookies that have been dipped in both a coating of milk chocolate and and coating of a peanut butter candy shell.

If you’re one of the millions who enjoy the mix of peanut butter and chocolate, you, like me, might be curious as to how well they go with the addition of crackers. (If you’re not into that mix, or if you’re allergic to peanuts, then I’ll save you some time: these aren’t for you.)

Personally, I rank Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups pretty highly, though I feel like the candy was truly perfected in my favorite, Reese’s Pieces. So, with that said, how do these new candy-coated cookies compare?

First, aesthetically, a minor complaint: it’s hard to tell what animal you’re looking at with these candy-coated cookies. Part of the fun of eating animal crackers is biting the heads off of giraffes, lions, bears and bison. I can still tell, sort of, which animals are found underneath the coating. But there are zero visible features, so know that going in.

But how’s the taste? Well, it’s pretty good! The addition of a crunchy cracker to a Reese’s chocolate/peanut butter combo is not a bad one by any means. They’re satisfying to bite into in a way that’s missing from most chocolate candy, particularly a Reese’s cup. I could even see them being a pretty satisfying item to dip into milk, in traditional cookie fashion.

Ultimately, though, I think these crackers don’t take the place of any of Reese’s more traditional candy options. And they’re clearly not meant to - instead they’re an alternate option. If you’re craving a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, these might hold you over, but I don’t think they’ll satisfy in the same way.

Instead, I see these more as a cookie/cracker replacement option. They’re crunchy and fun and have a sweet/salty combo that’s more akin to Reese’s Dipped Pretzels. Also, they come in decent-sized packages, which don’t really feel like something someone can just mindlessly munch on and finish in one sitting (unlike animals crackers, as I can see inhaling an equivalent number without much trouble).

So I feel like I recommend these new Reese’s Dipped Animal Crackers as a good sweet treat for sharing - something that is pretty rare when it comes to candy bar-sized snacks, but much more suited for a bag of cookies.

I could see buying a pack of them again, but they’re not replacing Reese’s Pieces in my heart any time soon. Overall, I’d say this earns a 3 out of 5 from me, about on par with my experience trying the new Wendy’s Italian Mozarella Cheeseburger.
