"The Sandman" is a new Netflix series based on the graphic novel series by author Neil Gaiman. The entire first season is now available to stream.

The dark fantasy series follows Morpheus, the lord of dreams, on a quest to restore order and reclaim his divine powers. Morpheus usually presides over the Dreaming, the world awaiting mortals when they sleep, but he loses his dominion after he is imprisoned for over a century by a magician.

Tom Sturridge, who is best known for his Broadway performances in "Orphan" and "Sea Wall/A Life," stars as the otherworldly Sandman. He's joined by an impressive ensemble that includes Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Boyd Holbrook, Gwendoline Christie, Jenna Coleman, Charles Dance, David Thewlis, and Mark Hamill.

Season one is executive produced by author Neil Gaiman, Allan Heinberg ("Wonder Woman") and David S. Goyer ("Batman Begins"). Early reviews have been very positive, and the show holds an "89% Certified Fresh" score on Rotten Tomatoes as of August 5.

How to watch 'The Sandman'

You can watch "The Sandman" exclusively on Netflix. All 10 episodes of the first season premiered on August 5.

Netflix's Basic plan costs $10 a month for standard definition streaming on one screen. The Standard plan is $15.49 a month for up to two screens at a time in high definition. "The Sandman" is based on the DC comic book series of the same name by Neil Gaiman. The popular and critically acclaimed comic ran for 75 issues between 1989 and 1996 and is a New York Times Bestseller. In 1991, it became the first comic ever to receive a literary award, the World Fantasy Award for Best Short Story.

Netflix's new series isn't the first time "The Sandman" comics have come to life. The series was adapted as an audiobook by Audible with James McAvoy ("Split") as Morpheus. It was also in development to become a feature film, but the project never came to fruition.

Season one of "The Sandman" will cover the first two volumes of the comic series. There are 10 total volumes in its original run and you can purchase them all in paperback or digitally from retailers like Amazon.

Is 'The Sandman' Marvel or DC?

"The Sandman" is a DC series published under the company's Vertigo imprint for adult readers. Some Vertigo series are set within the DC universe, allowing characters to crossover into other DC comics, while other titles are set in their own worlds

"The Sandman" comic does feature appearances by some DC heroes, and characters from "Sandman" have also appeared in series like "The Justice League of America."
