Three members of Denny Hamlin's crew were suspended by NASCAR on Monday following a mishap at the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday. A piece of tungsten fell off Hamlin's car on the pace lap before the race, resulting in NASCAR making the decision to suspend the crucial crew members.

The crew chief Chris Gabehart, car chief Brandon Griffeth and engineer Scott Simmons were suspended until June 10. The Joe Gibbs Racing team says they will not appeal the penalty.

The 35-pound, $1,877 piece fell off the Toyota before the race, causing Hamlin to pit to take on additional weight. He got back into the action of the race eight laps in.

Hamlin finished the Coca-Cola 600 in 29th place out of the 40 cars.

NASCAR rules state that the tungsten must meet a minimum weight requirement on the car and any separation occurs, there will be a four-race suspension for the crew chief, car chief and engineer.

The next four races are taking place at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway, Atlanta Motor Speedway and Martinsville Speedway.

Their team is forced to make adjustments for the next few races, and already have their replacement team in order for the race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Wednesday.

Sam McAulay is filling in as the crew chief, Eric Phillips is taking on the car chief role and Scott Eldridge will be the engineer.

Hamlin's team has been solid so far this season. He won the Daytona 500, the season opener, and won at the Darlington Raceway, the second race back after a stoppage due to the coronavirus pandemic
