Russia's Admiralty Shipyards is planning to sign a contract on the construction of a ship designed to conduct research of the Arctic Ocean, company’s CEO told Sputnik.

ST.PETERSBURG (Sputnik) – Russia's St. Petersburg-based Admiralty Shipyards is planning to sign a contract with the Russian Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring (Rosgidromet) on construction of a ship designed to conduct research of the Arctic Ocean, company’s CEO, Alexander Buzakov, told Sputnik.

"Speaking of a civilian part of our work, we are hoping to sign a contract on the construction of a ship for the research of the Arctic Ocean with Rosgidromet during the next year," Buzakov said.

The Admiralty Shipyards, which is part of Russia’s United Shipyard Corporation, has already made a design draft of the ship, the CEO noted.

"The project itself does not exist yet, but it was included in the government program of socio-economic development of the Arctic. Currently we have only a design draft and expect to develop the ship's full-scale technical design in 2018," Buzakov added.

The Admiralty Shipyards had previously built the Akademik Tryoshnikov research vessel for Rosgidromet, which made its maiden trip to the Arctic Ocean in 2012.
