Barter In-Focus: International Monetary Systems

August 4, 2010 (FinancialWire) (Investrend Information Syndicate) (Go to for all of today’s featured news.) — In our recent commentary article entitled “Complementary Currencies: Trade Dollars & The WIR (see we discussed International Monetary Systems, Ltd. (ITNM.OB) and how the IMS network enables companies to acquire new business, create cost savings, and improve operations by taking advantage of barter opportunities in their business models.

Based in New Berlin, WI and managed by seasoned industry veterans, IMS is one of the largest publicly traded barter companies in the world and is continually expanding its network by adding exchange locations. The company's proprietary transaction software, Trade Network Tracking System, enables businesses and individuals to trade goods and services throughout North America online using an electronic currency known as “trade dollars”.

We contacted IMS CEO, Don Mardak, and asked him to elaborate on the barter system as an alternative amidst today’s volatile economy. Mardak was quich to point out that he considers the barter system a complement rather than an alternative to the economic system. Specifically, Mardak pointed-out the WIR dollar system and the relative stability of the Swiss economy.

Since then, we ran across an article in Crain’s Chicago Business, by John Rosenthal (, which mirrored much of what our original article conveyed, as well as some testimonial experiences.

In the Crain’s article, Mardak was quoted as saying "One-on-one barter agreements don't work because there's seldom an exact incidence of coincidence… If I'm a printer and you're a chiropractor, I can't barter my fliers unless I have a bad back."

Also, the Crain’s article, noted that “barter systems can open doors to new customers. Mike Everly, president of Chicago's Avenue Business Center, found a market on IMS for empty office space.”

Additionally Crain’s explained that “IMS provides each member with a broker to help navigate the network,” and went on to describe how “that made a difference for Lisa Luna, president of BGT Landscape Co. in Des Plaines.”
