In contemporary social gatherings, it has recently become trendy to meet at a place serving beer or wine and put paint to canvas.
This activity is aimed at a fun night out. Hopefully there is a designated driver.

Someone (the “artist”) stands in front of those gathered and places marks on a canvas with paint in a step-by-step, “paint like me” method. This can be a fun and interesting evening. But are the participants really making art?
Not even close.
It is more likened to “paint-by-number” or playing the game “follow the leader.”
My intent with this column is not to condemn wine and paint parties, but to clarify that no one seriously involved with the arts as an administrator, historian or artist will agree that this is art. It’s only about having a fun time.
However, there a possibility that one or more of the attendees might develop a desire to learn how to really paint and sign up to take a true art course with an established instructor.
Real art is a product of well-developed techniques and well-studied topics. Content of the artwork illustrates the artist’s individual philosophical views. The end product of true art, is most certainly an essay, geared to make the viewer think.
As the artist Paul Gauguin said, “It is not good enough to simply paint. You must actually say something.”
In support of the value of “paint like me” session, it can be argued that past era paint-by-number canvases have become valuable. Yes, some have, but it has nothing to do with art, rather antiquity, and then only if they were done well and produced by original and specific manufacturers. They are even more valuable if they remain in the original packaging, unopened.
Paint and wine parties are geared to have a fun night out with friends and participating in an activity that ends with a souvenir to bring home.
Margarita anyone?
