It's a day of caring in the Quad Cities and hundreds of volunteers fanned out across the community to help with various projects.

1,600 volunteers from nearly 50 companies helped read to children, assisted with community meals or helped paint or landscape on Thurs. Sept. 21, 2017.

One group of employees from John Deere and the Catholic Messenger offered a little elbow grease while moving furniture, cleaning, and pricing donated items for the Humility of Mary's rummage sale.

The United Way organizes the event to help its partner agencies.

"Agencies and non-profits do not have the personnel to get the job done," said Patti Trapp, volunteer coordinator for the Humility of Mary. "Last year here, over 41,000 hours were given by volunteers to help keep this place running."

Humility of Mary provides shelter and transitional housing to the homeless and the sale is a major fundraiser. The Fresh Start rummage sale is being held at the donation center, located at 3805 Mississippi Ave. in Davenport on September 29th and 30th.
