Wednesday January 29, 2025

Mogadishu (HOL) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to expanding its energy capacity as a key pillar for modernization and economic development during his speech at the Africa Energy Summit on Tuesday.

President Mohamud highlighted the Horn of Africa’s vast renewable energy potential, particularly its solar and wind resources, which he described as essential for sustainable and environmentally friendly energy production.

“The progress Somalia aspires to achieve requires affordable and accessible energy. Currently, 50% of our population lacks sufficient electricity. Therefore, we are prioritizing investments in the energy sector to enable industrial growth, modernize infrastructure, and improve public services,” he stated.

The Africa Energy Summit, attended by leaders from across the continent, concluded with the Dar es Salaam Declaration, a pledge to ensure electricity access for 300 million Africans by 2030.

President Mohamud’s delegation included Minister of Energy and Water Resources Abdullahi Bidhan Warsame and Minister of Finance Biixi Imaan Egeh, who are expected to hold sideline meetings with their counterparts to discuss renewable energy initiatives and investment opportunities.

The Somali leader also invited international stakeholders to invest in Somalia’s energy projects, emphasizing the country’s untapped potential as a promising market for sustainable energy solutions.
