A main road through a seaside village in Somerset has been closed in both directions as an emergency incident unfolds. Firefighters are in Church Road, in Brean, and the route is currently closed to traffic.

Congestion has been reported in the area and Google Maps shows heavy traffic along Church Road and the nearby Weston Road.

Traffic and travel monitoring service Inrix reports: "Church Road in both directions closed, heavy traffic due to fire services activity between The Caravan Dealership and Lympsham turn off."

Pub closed by fire

The Beachcomber said in a post on Facebook: "Due to an ongoing fire in our back rooms, The Beachcomber will be closed today and tonight. Fire officers are on the scene and everyone is safe.

"We will update you further when we know more. Thank you for your support.

"Edit: To clarify, our back rooms (used for office and storage space) are a separate building to the pub itself. The Beachcomber itself remains in tact."

Crews rush to building fire

Firefighters are working to extinguish a building fire in Brean.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 11:15 to reports a building fire in Brean, Burnham on sea. There are currently 6 appliances along with an aerial platform and an incident command unit on scene. Crews are currently working to extinguish the fire."
