A contract covering 20,000 security officers in New York is set to expire Tuesday night.

Negotiations with building employers have been ongoing since February — with some demands, including a strong wage increase, 100% employer-paid health and training benefits, and observing Juneteenth as a paid holiday.

Many of these workers can be found working in buildings like the Statue of Liberty, the Chrysler Building, Rockefeller Center and the World Trade Center, as well as universities and city shelters.

Israel Melendez, the vice president of 32BJ SEIU and the director of the New York security division, and Mirna Ruperto, a security guard at a downtown commercial office building, joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Tuesday to talk about where contract negotiations currently stand.

“We have security officers at all these iconic locations that really, really deserve a fair wage increase, deserve to not worry about where their health care comes from,” Melendez said.
