New Delhi: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) by 1 run in an epic last-ball thriller at the Eden Gardens in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on Sunday, April 21. It was a nail-biting encounter which went down the wire as KKR held their nerves to secure a thrilling victory after successfully defending the total of 223 runs at their home.

With 21 runs required in the last over Karn Sharma nearly pulled off a heist for RCB with three sixes in 4 balls against Mitchell Starc but failed to take his team home. While the game witnessed a jaw-dropping finish, it also saw several controversies. RCB star Virat Kohli clashed with the on-field umpires after getting dismissed by KKR pacer Harshit Rana during his side’s chase while KKR mentor Gautam Gambhir too was involved in a heated argument with the 4th umpire.

Gambhir and KKR head coach Chandrakant Pandit were seen having a heated discussion with the fourth umpire on the sidelines. The incident happened during the 19th over of RCB’s run chase when the visitors needed 31 to win off 12 balls with Dinesh Karthik and Karn Sharma in the middle. KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer was spotted signalling something towards the dugout before Gambhir and Pandit clashed with the 4th umpire. A clip of the incident went viral on social media.

Why did Gautam Gambhir clash with the 4th umpire?

Initially, even the commentators were confused as to why Gambhir and Pandit were arguing with the fourth umpire. However, it was later revealed that the 4th umpire denied KKR a replacement for injured Sunil Narine on the field which led to the clash. Narine had injured his toe while batting and KKR wanted to take him off the field since he had completed his quota of 4 overs.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz was ready to come in as a substitute field in Narine’s place, however, the umpire refused to allow the substitution. Narine had injured his toe after he was hit on his shoe by a toe-crushing yorker from left-arm pacer Yash Dayal while batting.

With the 1-run win against RCB, KKR moved to the second spot on the IPL 2024 points table. The two-time champions have five wins from seven matches so far this season and look favourites to make it to the playoffs.
