Letter from Bush

A letter from then-Congressman George H.W. Bush to Genie Flournoy following his loss to Lloyd Bentsen in the 1970 U.S. Senate race. Flournoy directed his campaign in Angelina County and was a close friend of his, along with her husband Bob.

Upon receiving the notice of George Herbert Walker Bush’s death, Lufkin residents Bob and Genie Flournoy remembered the letter they received after bonding with the president over his first statewide election in 1970.

“Part of his legacy is that he wrote letters. Lots of letters, personal letters, to people over the years,” Bob Flournoy said. “It’s a letter that gives a lot of insight into his personality, his character, so this was 48 years ago. He’s writing a letter to my wife, Genie, who does a lot of stuff down here.”
